Due to lengthy hospital stays and distance between the family's home and the hospital, there were not only emotional stresses but financial stresses as well. Fortunately, the N.C.C.S. was able to provide the family with assistance. Phone cards helped the family maintain contact by telephone when they were unable to be together. Assistance with meals and transportation costs during the most intense phase of Katia's treatment helped alleviate some of the family's stress. Katia is now in the maintenance phase of her treatment and continues to be monitored closely, but this is typically on an outpatient basis. The family is very grateful to be able to spend more time together.
